Notes from the Universe

Nearly one year ago, not long after I had graduated from college and was still trying to figure out my life, when I was feeling particularly lost and inadequate and alone, I found myself in need of a morale boost.

Ally, a blogger I had been following for a couple of years at the time, had posted images of emails she’d received from the Universe. In my unsteady, transitional state, I longed to be reminded of the same beautiful messages.

The universe can be equally as scary as it is comforting. It is immeasurable in size and distance. No one really knows if there is anything more than just the one universe we know of, and so it is easy to feel overwhelmed at all of those unknowns, all of the space. And yet, the same grandiosity offers some hope. With all that exists in our world, on our planet, and in our solar system, and in our galaxy–with all that exists in the universe, what is stopping you from finding exactly what you want? There is so much room to figure out the person you are, what you believe, and what kind of mark you will leave on the world.

During the time I spent studying in Ireland, when the weather was still quite chilly and it left an ache for more than just warmth in my bones, I often found myself looking to the night sky for some comfort. If I could just find the Orion constellation, if I could simply locate Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka shining in Orion’s belt–things would be okay. Those were the same stars, after all, that I saw when I was at school in New Hampshire, when I drove home on long winter nights, and when I walked up the front steps of my childhood home. It didn’t matter that I was walking on cobbled sidewalks on nights that were colder and windier than I thought possible, miles and miles from the familiar. The stars were home. Since then, I have had a greater appreciation for the universe and all of its glowing, burning beings.

The emails I received from the Universe came a few times a week and were filled with messages of love, kindness, hope, and inspiration. They made me feel a tiny bit less lost and less inadequate and less alone. If the universe tells you that things will be okay, that things will work out somehow, you have to believe it. The notes often put a smile on my face first thing in the morning when I check my emails, but there have been plenty of times when a note has done much more: walked me off ledges of worry and panic; provided guidance when I needed a sign; given me hope for the future.

In honor of almost one year of notes, I have compiled a list of some of my favorites:
